Ryukyu glass is a traditional craft born in Okinawa, Japan.
The history of glasswork in Okinawa started about 100 years ago in the Meiji period, and it developed after World War II by recycling waste glass of coke and beer thrown away by US Military Bases there. Various colors of recycled glass and air bubbles that are easy to appear in recycling gave Ryukyu glass crafts their original and unique beauty.
Nowadays it is becoming hard to collect waste glass, and usually new glass
is partially or entirely used, but the beauty of colorful glass and air
bubbles which are great features of Ryukyu glass crafts remains unchanged
and attracts us.
